We stayed at Chivapuri Resort Koh Chang as the second stop of our island trip over Songkran 2021. The resort is located at the far southern end of the island and would definitely be considered off the beaten path. We booked a beach front villa at a cost of 5000 baht per night, making it the most expensive accommodations of our trip by far.
Finding Chivapuri on the map was simple, but actually getting there was not. The road to the southern end of Koh Chang is long, winding and dangerous. Once near Bang Bao, Google maps tried taking us 2 different ways; both of which were literally impossible for a car to go. Google maps sucks in Thailand, in case you did not know.
We called Chivapuri and the person who answered the phone was not at all helpful in getting us to the resort. They were quite clueless, in fact. We eventually navigated our way through largely unmarked dirt paths to the resort and found no one there to greet us or help with our bags. We wandered over to reception and found a woman there who said our room was not ready, despite it being past our scheduled check-in time. Ok, so we can wait. Is there a porter to help with our bags so we do not have to leave food and photo equipment in the very hot car while we wait? No, of course not. We ventured off to move our own bags but someone saw us struggling and came to help, although it was not his job… This would set the tone of service at Chivapuri Resort for the entire trip.
We only had to wait a few minutes for our room. However, the reception lady told us that they would not be servicing our room, even though the Agoda listing clearly said they would. She said not to worry since they would be leaving us fresh towels and water each day on our porch. This never occurred and we had to use the same towels each day and go to buy our own water in town. No one provided ANY service to the room while we were there.
Our room was amazing! It was by far the best part of Chivapuri Resort. The room was beautiful and functional and definitely was the nicest of our trip. The bed was super comfortable and the room was clean. The bathroom was awkward, since it had no shower surround and the entire bathroom got wet whenever we ran the shower. This is a typical stupid design choice found in Thailand and completely out of place in this price category of room. However, the room was great and saved our experience here, which otherwise would have been a complete fail.
We had breakfast each morning at the resort. The food selection was adequate, but not great. The quality was also subpar, particularly in this price point. The breakfast was outdoors, which is vital during covid, but was far too crowded. On day 2, they tried to add more tables outside the actual restaurant, but the crowded scene was not safe looking and a real turn off to us and most of the complaining guests.
We tried to eat dinner our first night there, but we waited for over an hour without receiving our basic food order. For that hour, all we got were 2 horrific drinks that tasted like medicine. The seating was all outdoor and was spread out to feel safe compared to breakfast. There were only a few other tables of people and everyone was waiting and waiting. The 2 girls next to us actually fell asleep at their table waiting for food that never came. To add insult to injury, one server refused to work and instead hid on the perimeter of the dining area smoking disgusting cigarettes the entire time, offending many guests (especially since smoking is suspected of spreading covid).
Fortunately for us, it began to rain and we headed off to the kitchen along with every other guest, to get our checks. The staff could not even manage this simple task and the scene escalated into a shouting match with guests obviously angry at the abysmal service. We had food packed with us, so we retreated to our room after settling the check (they could not even make change for us…) and had a simple meal in our room.
The beach here in front of Chivapuri Resort was ok. The water was not really clean or clear, so snorkeling was out of the question. It was picturesque, but not nearly as nice as other beaches on Koh Chang. It was also rocky and featured bad visibility, making it a bit of a hazard to venture out into the water. The rest of the property was natural and nice, in generally good condition. However, a member of the maintenance staff was also found smoking constantly, even when working closely near children in the pool day and day. This was a huge turn off for us and extremely unprofessional.
Our experience at Chivapuri Resort was the worst of the trip and we will not be back. We do not recommend it and was really upset at the price-to-service ratio. Yes, it was during covid, but all the other resorts handled things fine and Chivapuri simply failed. When our 2 days were up, we were happy to leave and move on to what would be 3 more much better places to stay.
Not every experience is a good one, but at least now we know that a trip to the southern end of the island is not worth the time or effort. Amazingly, we had this really poor experience after telling the reception staff that we would be reviewing the room for various social platforms several times! They obviously just did not care, so this is the review they get and deserve! We hate to give bad reviews, as you can tell from the vast majority of incredibly good reviews on our website and Youtube channel. However, it does not do anyone any service to lie to protect an establishment that does such a poor job in every measurable criterion, except room quality.
Better pastures ahead… Let’s go!
