Jammy Journey is happy to provide this review of the Marriott Marquis Queens Park Hotel after our recent staycation. We spent 2 days and nights at the hotel and checked out all their amenities in order to provide a thorough accounting of our experience.
This Marriott Marquis property is conveniently located in Phrom Phong, Bangkok, not far from the BTS train. It has a great location to access many of the fine attractions in the area, such as EmQuartier and Emporium Malls. When we stayed, the hotel had an entire tower closed due to the ongoing ravages of covid-19 on the economy and on their operations.
We booked our stay at Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queens Park months before we actually stayed there. The booking was made before covid wave 3 struck Thailand in April of 2021. Our intention was to stay immediately, but before we could, wave 3 closed the country down for about 6 months. We did not feel safe going anywhere during this time and with the covid restrictions set forth by the government, the experience would probably have not been very good anyway.
Eventually, the country began to emerge from months of lockdown and we only had a few weeks left in order to make our trip here. We booked the dates and set off from home to enjoy the amenities of the hotel, even though many restrictions were still in place. We had booked an M Suite room with Club Lounge benefits at the cost of about 5000 baht per night, which equates to about $167 at the time. This room came with late check out, afternoon tea and free flow alcoholic drinks in the lounge. We were really looking forward to some nice wine with a view over the city of Bangkok when we made the booking. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned…
Our checkin was quick and easy. The hotel was not crowded when we checked in. We were promptly shown to our room, which was large and lovely. We had requested a great view for our IG, but the view was not good. While high up, the view faced directly into the side of another building and we decided not to waste any time or effort shooting photos here. Oh well, it is the hotel’s loss, since we did shoot some awesome pics at the park next door, but they will not be tagged in those.
The room itself was great. It was super comfortable and large with a stunning bath. All the features were nice and welcoming. During the 2 days we stayed here, we found the room to be very satisfying, quiet and ultra-clean, which are all great things! We did not leave the hotel during our stay, except to go to the local convenience store and park. We spent much time here and can therefore share all the experiences we had with you.
Since the Club Lounge was still closed due to covid, and since the hotel was not serving any alcohol (except in the room), we were offered a free spa treatment or lunch. We did not understand how getting a spa treatment was safer than having a drink in the lounge and felt this was really characteristic of the illogical policies in place. We elected for the lunch. We would have much preferred the hotel to send a bottle of wine up to our room, since we did pay for free flow booze and did not receive a single drop of alcohol during our entire stay. We feel this to be a serious misstep on the part of the management.
The Club Lounge service had been moved to the lobby. It was very crowded and did not feel safe eating in such close, indoor proximity to many other guests. Additionally, the food offered for dinner was completely tasteless and served cafeteria style, not 5 star hotel style. Since it was so crowded, we had to sit at the computer terminals to eat. It was a bad experience.
Breakfast was much better, although the confined quarters still made us uneasy. The staff was wonderful and the food was divine. We loved our breakfast both days and only wish we could have sat outside, since we were told outdoor seating was available when making the booking. The outdoor seating was only 3 useable tables directly in the sun and 1 in the shade that was taken each day by a huge family. Sigh…
Our “free lunch” was available into dinner hours, so we took advantage and had dinner instead. We were able to relax here, with no one around and outdoor seating available. The meal was lovely and one of the high points of our stay. We really appreciated the kind staff for their excellent service.
The best part of our stay at Marriott Marquis Queens Park was the actual park! The hotel has direct access to Benjasiri Park, which is a small, but lovely oasis in the middle of the busy city. We loved time here in nature with the birds, turtles and various other little animal friends. It made the whole trip worthwhile, since we do not have any park near us in Bangkok and miss time spent in nature terribly.
We also reserved time to use the pool. Although small, the pool did have lane markers and we got our daily swim in while we were there. Service poolside was nonexistent and we simply got our own towels and made ourselves comfortable. We are self-sufficient travelers after all.
The 2 days and nights went by so quickly and we ended up staying until nighttime the day of our checkout. We rarely use late checkout, but here we did so that we could report on more hotel features. All in all, it was a really nice stay. The best parts were the comfort and cleanliness of the room, the nice food service staff and the park next door. The worst parts were the various covid-related changes that really sucked, the inability of the management to satisfactorily compensate guests who paid for alcohol and a real Club Lounge experience and did not receive it, and the view from the room. It sounds a bit nit-picky, but remember that although we always want to have a perfect time, we have to tell the truth as reviewers in order to help fellow travelers to make well informed decisions about where to stay. We think the hotel is very nice, but really would have preferred to stay here when the restrictions had been fully lifted. We would have nicer things to say for sure, but unfortunately, we had no choice but to use our booking or lose our money. The hotel forced us to stay under the limitations of covid and the review reflects this.
